Peritoneal Mesothelioma Cancer
Peritoneal mesothelioma cancer is a form of cancer that targets the abdominal cavity lining. It is a less common type mesothelioma compared to pleural mesothelioma and comprises only about a third of all diagnosed mesothelioma cases. The latency period for peritoneal mesothelioma cancer is also lower than the pleural form. The asbestos exposure related symptoms in peritoneal mesothelioma cancer start appearing within 20 to 30 years, whereas for pleural mesothelioma, it varies from 20 to 50 years after the initial exposure to asbestos. Thus prognosis and subsequent treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma cancer presents more encouraging results than other forms of mesothelioma.
There are several types of mesothelioma that are named according to where they are located in the body. Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lungs, and is the most common type of the cancer due to the inhalation of asbestos. The next most common is peritoneal mesothelioma cancer which occurs in the abdominal area. Pericardial and testicular mesothelioma occur in the heart and testicles respectively. Statistically, about 10% of pleural mesothelioma patients will survive for five years after diagnosis, with lower rates for other types of mesothelioma diagnoses. The prognosis is also determined by the type of mesothelioma cancer cell, where mesothelioma affecting epithelial cells has a better prognosis than mesothelioma affecting sarcomatoid or biphasic cells.
